Understanding Alberta natural gas and electricity rates
Alberta’s spectacular diversity and natural beauty attract worldwide attention every year. If you’re lucky enough to live in this province—a bucket-list destination for many—you’re well-versed in its charms. You’re also aware that by fall, the cerulean lakes, towering peaks, and ancient forests that lure visitors turn decidedly less hospitable. When winter arrives in the Great White North, it’s relentless. The short, dark days and frigid temperatures are much easier to endure with affordable natural gas and electricity service.
Rushing into a natural gas or electricity contract during a move or another particularly hectic time is common, but don’t settle with a subpar provider. If you’ve been overpaying for your energy service or are unhappy with your current provider, you can switch at any time. Rates, term length, and service all matter when comparing energy providers in Alberta.
As a Just Energy customer, you’ll get more than just affordable rates. Read on to learn why Just Energy is the best choice for Alberta customers.

Alberta residents have the power to choose
If you’ve been searching for Alberta energy, you’ve probably come across both regulated rate providers and competitive rate providers. These terms refer to different types of energy suppliers in Alberta. After the Alberta government deregulated energy, it opened the market to competitive rate providers. Previously, one regulated rate provider set prices and provided service, and residents weren’t able to shop around. Now, you have the power to choose your Alberta energy provider.

Deregulated energy benefits Albertans
Deregulated energy encourages competition, especially among competitive rate providers, which helps consumers. Just Energy is a competitive rate provider. We purchase energy from utilities, sell it to our customers at affordable rates, and provide extras like green energy and fixed-rate plans.
Because of the way deregulated energy works, you’ll see a variety of charges on your bill from Just Energy:
- Supply charges for the amount of electricity and/or natural gas you used in the previous month.
- Distribution charges for maintenance of power lines, gas pipes, and other power delivery infrastructure. These charges are fixed.
- Transmission charges cover the cost of power grid maintenance and other transportation costs.
Your bill may include other charges, but the above will account for the largest percentage of your bill.
Switch in just a few minutes
Sometimes when you move to a new property, you first need to sign up with a regulated energy provider. Once you have service, you can switch to a competitive energy provider. At Just Energy, we make the switching process as easy as possible for our customers.
- Call Just Energy Alberta. One of our energy advisors will help you choose a natural gas or electricity plan or bundle that best fits your needs.
- Let your current supplier know you’ll be switching.
- Get back to your busy life—we’ll take it from here. Just Energy will handle the switching process without any interruption in service for you.
Once you receive your first bill from Just Energy, your switch is complete.

Emergency or outage? Please report it.
Gas leaks are rare, but they can happen anytime. Pay attention to the following signs in or around your property:
- A hissing sound or loud roar
- The smell of sulfur or rotten eggs
- Frozen patches of ground in warm areas
- Discolored or dead plants
If you suspect you have a gas leak, leave the property and head for a safe area. Then, call your utility’s gas leak hotline to report the issue.
For power outages or electrical issues, report your issue through Just Energy using the link below.
