What is Hydro One Networks?
Hydro One Networks was founded in 1999 though its corporate roots date back to 1906 and is Ontario’s biggest transmission and distribution service provider.[1] Its service area covers about 75% of Ontario’s geographical area. It distributes electricity to nearly 1.5 million customers, most of whom live in rural locations.
As a utility company, Hydro One is responsible for the equipment and infrastructure that delivers power to your home. It also manages your billing when you use an Ontario Energy Board (OEB) Regulated Price Plan (RPP) for electricity. The OEB sets rates for these plans, and Hydro One doesn’t profit from your OEB energy bill. It earns money only through transmission and distribution fees, which the OEB also regulates.
However, Ontario residents don’t have to use the OEB’s Regulated Price Plans. You can shop around and sign up for energy plans from retail electric providers (REPs) such as Just Energy.
