Top tip: AES Ohio is also called by its previous name, Dayton Power and Light (DPL or DP&L).

Ohio Electricity Plans and Rates

Since 1999, Ohio’s deregulated energy market has involved several layers to ensure the Buckeye State’s electricity provides people with the best value.

Utility companies generate power and balance the power grid. Just Energy is one of multiple suppliers offering people electric plans in AES Ohio’s service area.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) oversees the free market to protect customers, and the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) helps folks in disputes with anyone along that energy chain.

The new CRES players like Just Energy led to outside-the-box thinking, birthing everything from long-term, fixed-rate deals to rewarding heavy users with minimum usage offers. This mix of players in the energy market is the present and future of energy in Ohio.

Why? Almost three in five Ohioans have switched suppliers and collectively saved more than $24 billion on utility bills since 2011. Switching works.

How AES Ohio Works With Energy Suppliers

Ohio’s post-deregulation energy market involves utility companies generating power, balancing the power grid, restoring power after blackouts, and maintaining power lines and meters.

As such, AES Ohio continues to provide power to over half a million customers in over 24 states. Delivery charges on electric bills pay for this service. Customers cannot change their utility company or lower these delivery charges.

However, supply charges are where people can shop around for better value. CRESs like Just Energy offer plans that can lock in your supply charges so you don’t have to worry about price volatility.

How Just Energy Works With AES Ohio

Just Energy scours the energy markets for the best prices and converts those into great-value offers while AES Ohio keeps the lights on. Competition between CRES companies is designed to help people save money on energy bills. This is energy deregulation in action.

Our energy experts create fantastic long-term fixed-rate electricity prices to protect people from changing market conditions and pricing.

Our customers continue to pay AES Ohio monthly for electricity. The delivery charges remain the same, but the supply charge changes, hopefully saving customers money.

Anyone who doesn’t choose an electric company is automatically enrolled in AES Ohio’s default standard service offer (SSO). SSO rates can fluctuate, meaning the supply charges may be unpredictable. Only fixed-rate products like Just Energy’s bring reliable prices people can depend upon. That’s why it’s vital to avoid switching to the SSO rate when there are stable deals that help with energy budgeting and security.

About AES Ohio

AES Ohio started life in Dayton in 1883 as The Dayton Electric Lighting Company. Fast forward to 1911, and the power company became Dayton Power and Light Company (DP&L), providing electricity to Miami Valley and West Central Ohio.

In 1985, Miami Valley Lighting was established as a separate entity from DP&L to provide street and outdoor lighting services in the Dayton region.

Elsewhere, in 1981, AES came into being as an energy consultation firm. Within a decade, the AES company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: AES) and is now a Fortune 500 company.

The AES Corporation continued to grow and, in 2011, acquired DP&L (along with Miami Valley). The businesses continued with the same names until 2021, when DP&L shed its traditional name to become AES Ohio, complete with a new logo.

AES Ohio now has more than 527,000 customers across 24 states in West Central Ohio, including Miami County, Dayton, Montgomery, and Clinton. It has almost 18,000 miles of distribution lines and around 900 employees at its Dayton headquarters.

Deregulation in Ohio: What Does It Mean?

Before deregulation in 1999, Ohio had seven state electric utility companies called electric distribution utilities (EDUs). AES Ohio, then called DP&L, was one of those utilities.

The 1999 Ohio Electric Restructuring Act saw utility companies unpack the various elements of the electric and natural gas market. Generation, transmission, and supply became available to other companies.

AES Ohio continued to generate and transmit electricity, keep the lights on, and offer Standard Service Offer (SSO) variable rates. From 2001 onwards, CRES like Just Energy were able to provide people with their own electricity and natural gas rates.

Gone was a universal, fluctuating rate for everyone, and deals like Just Energy’s stable, fixed-rate, and clean energy products came in. Such innovative thinking has transformed Ohio’s energy market, lowering prices and saving billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

AES Ohio also takes part in collective bargaining options called aggregation. Together, communities use their collective bargaining power to barter for better energy prices from companies. People can opt in or out of any agreement. Some aggregations look for the lowest prices, while others place more value on other aims, like clean energy from renewable energy.

The power to choose has been transformative in Ohio, with competition to meet people’s energy needs lowering prices.

What’s the Difference Between Ohio Utilities vs. Electricity Suppliers?

Ohio utilities like AES Ohio keep the lights on, maintain the power grid and restore power after outages. Customers pay for this via a delivery charge but cannot switch utilities. There are many in Ohio, including publicly owned utilities.

However, consumers in Ohio can choose their electricity supplier or CRES. Just Energy is one such option. Firms like us can change the amount you pay for the electricity you use, which appears as a supply charge on a utility bill.

The process is open and transparent. Ohio utility bills show a price-to-compare (PTC) rate. This PTC displays an individual’s estimated annual utility bill amount if they stay with the utility’s SSO rate. These numbers may push people to look for a new electric company to reduce their payments through a better electricity price.

Energy Choice Programs in Ohio

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) runs the Energy Choice Ohio website. Energy Choice Ohio has an Apples to Apples tool that allows users to compare electricity and natural gas deals for their ZIP code.

The website shows AES Ohio’s comparable kilowatt-hour (kWh) price to ease the process. Customers enter their ZIP code to find offers in their area. Filters such as kWh price, contract length, and renewable energy percentage target the perfect product. You could even focus solely on Just Energy’s great value fixed-rate deals.

The Energy Choice Ohio website covers electricity and natural gas. AES Ohio doesn’t operate in the natural gas market. However, Just Energy does offer natural gas products in qualifying service areas.
