Living in a deregulated energy market like Texas means you have the power to choose your energy provider from among dozens of options. One of those is Ambit Energy, a retail electricity provider that serves customers in Texas and several other states.

But is Ambit Energy available in your service area and does it offer the best electricity plan for you? Here’s what you need to know about Ambit Energy’s electricity services and how it compares to other energy providers in Texas.

What Is Ambit Energy?

Ambit Energy is a retail energy provider, which means it packages, markets, and sells energy plans to Ambit customers. Ambit doesn’t own or operate the power grid or the transmission lines that deliver electricity to your house: that’s up to your local utility company or an energy regulator like ERCOT.

Your energy provider is the entity that calculates your home energy usage, sends you an electricity bill, and handles any customer service complaints.

Ambit provides both electricity and natural gas services, although natural gas is only available in some of Ambit’s service areas.

Where Is Ambit Energy Located?

Ambit Energy was founded in Dallas, Texas, in 2006. It has expanded to deregulated markets outside of Texas, but still maintains its headquarters in Dallas.

Who Owns Ambit Energy?

Ambit Energy was called one of America’s “fastest-growing companies” in 2010. It was bought by Vistra Corp in 2019, which is one of the world’s largest energy companies.

Vistra Corp is based in Irving, Texas, and owns several power plants in California and other states. It also owns TXU Energy, Luminant, Dynegy, and other subsidiaries.

How Can You Contact Ambit Energy?

Ambit Energy offers several ways to contact their team. Their customer support team is available from 7am to 10pm Central Time at the following numbers:

Phone: (877) 282-6248 or (877) 28-AMBIT

Fax: (877) 805-5606

Business customers can use the following contact information for business inquiries:

Phone: (877) 654-3396

Fax: (877) 419-8706

Ambit’s mailing address is:

P.O. Box 864589
Plano, TX 75086

This address is for general correspondence. They have a separate mailing address for payments. In Texas, that address is:

P.O. Box 660462
Dallas, TX 75266-0462

What Are Ambit’s Service Areas?

Ambit’s Service Areas Man Adusts Thermostat At Homesource

Ambit is currently available in 15 service areas, including Texas, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, New Hampshire, and Washington, D.C.

Just because your state is on the list, though, doesn’t mean that Ambit is available in your area. For example, in Texas, Ambit Energy is only available in some parts of the state, including Dallas and Houston, but not El Paso and Austin.

That’s because the deregulated energy market doesn’t extend to the entire Texas power grid. When searching for energy providers, you’ll need to enter your ZIP code to find out what electricity plans are available in your area.

How Does Ambit Energy Compare to Other Energy Companies?

There’s one big difference between Ambit Energy and other energy companies, which is that Ambit operates using a multi-level marketing strategy to reach customers.

Instead of traditional advertising, it has a network of 600,000 independent consultants who serve as a “direct sales channel,” selling energy plans directly to customers.

Consultants pay an initial fee to become part of the network, and receive bonuses for signing up new customers. Consultants are prohibited from telemarketing and other unethical business practices when engaging with prospective customers.

Is Ambit a Good Energy Company?

Ambit has been the subject of several lawsuits and investigations, mostly over whether their marketing strategies incentivize consultants to exaggerate energy savings.

Although Ambit Energy has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, as of the date of writing in March 2023, it only has 1.23/5 stars based on 98 Ambit Energy reviews. The main complaint that customers had was that their electricity bill was unexpectedly high after switching to Ambit.

Ambit Energy has a higher rating on Consumer Affairs, with 3.9 out of 5 stars based on 503 reviews. Some customers complained about billing issues when paying over the phone or switching to a new address, but others said they had no issues.

What Energy Plans Does Ambit Offer?

Ambit customers can choose from several different energy plans depending on where you live. For example, Texas customers can choose the Summer Break plan, which offers 50% off of your energy bill between June and September.

Customers in the Northeast and Midwest have access to the Winter Break plan instead, which offers a similar discount between the months of November and February.

Below are several plans available, as of the date of writing, in the Dallas ZIP code 75052.

Lone Star Flex: This variable-rate plan has a base charge of $4.95 and an average rate of 20.3 cents per kilowatt-hour. It’s a month-to-month plan with no cancellation fee.

Free and Clear Nights 12: This fixed-rate plan comes with a base charge of $9.95 on your monthly bill, and requires a 12-month commitment. Electricity rates are 21.1cents per kWh during the daytime, and 0 cents/kWh between the hours of 9pm and 6am. You’ll need an AMS-enabled smart meter to sign up for this plan.

Ultimate Perks 24: This fixed-rate plan has a base charge of $9.95 and an average rate of 16.3 cents per kWh. This rate will be locked in for 24 months, but there’s an early termination fee of $199 if you cancel the contract before then. You’ll also get $50 “reward dollars” each month to spend at participating retailers.

Secure Savings 36: This fixed-rate plan is best for customers who want to lock in their electricity rates for a full three years. You’ll get an average rate of 14.9 cents per kWh, with no base charge on your monthly bill, and an early cancellation fee of $299.

What’s the Best Plan With Ambit Energy?

The best plan with Ambit Energy will depend on your energy usage and your personal needs and preferences. For instance, to lock in a fixed rate for several years, you’ll want to consider a long-term contract like Secure Savings 36.

But if you move frequently or think you’ll switch providers in the near future, consider a short-term contract or one with a smaller cancellation fee.

Another thing to consider is whether you want to get your power from renewable energy sources like wind or solar power. Ambit Energy offers several green energy plans, such as the Free & Clear Nights 12 plan, which is 100% powered by wind energy.

And if you want to make the most of a free energy plan, consider whether you can save money by using higher-energy appliances on nights or weekends.

Is Ambit Energy Cheap?

Ambit’s energy plans are similar to other companies in Texas, with a range of contracts to choose from. However, their energy rates may not be the cheapest on the market.

As of the date of writing, the cheapest plan they offer in 75052 is 14.1 cents per kWh, based on 1000 kWh/month of usage. In the same Dallas ZIP code, Just Energy offers plans as low as 10.5 cents per kilowatt hour, with no base charge.

Ambit Energy’s cancellation fees are in line with industry practices, but the $9.95 base charge on certain plans is higher than what some competitors charge.

Still, it’s important to shop around for electricity, because the same company may offer higher or lower rates based on your specific location and energy usage.

Remember, you can obtain important standardized information that will allow you to compare this product with other offers. Contact (Ambit Energy, (877) 282-6248 or www. ambitenergy.com)

What Is the Electricity Facts Label (EFL)?

The Electricity Facts Label (EFL) is an informational guide that retail electricity providers in Texas must show you before you sign up for their energy services. You can download the EFL for each Ambit Energy plan directly from the Ambit website.

The EFL was designed by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and is inspired by the nutritional labels found on food products. Instead of having to navigate each company’s policies separately, you’ll find a standard set of information on each form.

You’ll see the average price per kilowatt-hour right at the top, followed by transmission and delivery charges, the contract term, and any early termination fees.

Since electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours, make sure you’re looking at plans based on your actual energy usage: usually 1,000 or 2,000 kWh for a small to mid-sized home. Even fixed-rate plans can result in unexpected charges, since low energy usage in a given month — say, 500 kWh — can actually result in a higher rate per kWh.

How Can I Pay My Ambit Energy Bill?

Ambit customers have several options for paying their energy bill. You can log in to your MyAmbit account online to view your bill and set up paperless billing options.

If you want to pay your bill by mail, you can send a check or money order (along with your payment slip or account number) to:

Ambit Energy
P.O. Box 660462
Dallas, TX 75266-0462

Other options include Automatic Payment via bank account or credit card, or paying in cash at certain Western Union or MoneyGram locations.

Over-the-phone payments are available during customer support hours, or 24/7 if you use their automated system at (877) 282-6248.

Keep in mind that some payment methods may incur a fee.
